Albert B. Sabin, 1906-1993
Article Abstract:
A summary of the achievements of the eminent virologist Albert B. Sabin, who died in 1993, is presented. Sabin had been interested in the development of a polio vaccine even before he obtained his MD degree from New York University in 1931. He was instrumental in the development of the oral polio vaccine, which he promoted around the world practically until the end of his life. At various points in his life, Sabin also worked on the herpes B virus, the virus of sandfly fever and vaccines against dengue fever and Japanese B encephalitis. More recently, he had indicated an important direction for research on AIDS vaccines.

Novelist Dan Wakefield describes his experiences of attending his 50th high school reunion in Indianapolis. Wakefield had avoided his 25th reunion, having had a partially autobiographical novel published that scandalized his town, but, together with more than 50% of his 1950 graduating class, he attended and enjoyed his 50th reunion.
