Alpha male black howler monkey responses to loud calls: effect of numeric odds, male companion behaviour and reproductive investment
Article Abstract:
Using playback recordings of the loud calls of the black howler monkey, Alouatta pigra, the 'numeric odds' were manipulated to examine whether alpha males use loud calls to assess relative fighting ability, and whether they modify responses to intruders based on relationships with male companions. Thus, alpha males seemed to escalate in order to signal group-level fighting superiority rather than as a means to gather information on closely matched opponents, and also alpha males howled more quickly and for a longer time at potentially infanticidal intruders if small offspring were present in their group.

The function food-associated calls in white-faced capuchin monkeys, Cebus capucinus, from the perspective of the signaller
Article Abstract:
A combination of naturalistic observations and food placement experiments is used to investigate the environmental and social influences on call production in white-faced capuchin monkeys to assess other possible functions of food-associated calls. Results of the observations of social interactions after food discovery indicated another possible function of food-associated calls.

Alarm calls of white-faced capuchin monkeys: An acoustic analysis
Article Abstract:
An acoustic analysis was performed to determine whether alarm calls between and within categories of Capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) are characterized by distinct acoustic features. It was found that Capuchin monkey alarm calls might have the potential to be functionally referential, general and/or urgency-based signals.
