Japan is cool to request to help pay to run CERN
Article Abstract:
The Japanese Science Council's accelerator subcommittee met in Tokyo in Jan 1993 and objected to the proposal that Japan help fund the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). CERN director-general Carlo Rubbia argued that Japan ought to pay $18 million, or 2.5% of CERN's operating costs, since many Japanese physicists are using CERN. However, the Science Council subcommittee replied that such contributions would be inconsistent with traditional international cooperation in particle physics.
