An anchor for activation
Article Abstract:
Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta family members can transmits signals to the nucleus via a mixture of serine/threonine kinase receptors and Smads, their downstream effectors. Tsukazaki and colleagues have reported how the first intracellular stage in the TGC-beta/Smad pathway occurs, and identified an anchor protein, Smad anchor for receptor activation (SARA). They show that the subcellular localization of SARA is regulated by the FYVE domain, possibly through membrane-associated PtdIns(3)P.

Daughters against dpp modulates dpp organizing activity in Drosophila wing development
Article Abstract:
The TGF-beta family of signalling molecules is involved in a wide range of biological activities. A new study shows that, in a homologous signalling pathway in Drosophila, the inhibitory SMAD is a product of the Daughters against decapentaplegic (Dad) gene, whose transcription is regulated by the TGF-beta family member, Drosophila Decapentaplegicoption (Dpp). Overexpression of Dad is shown to inhibit Dpp activity. Details of the study are presented.
