Male-male competition and large size mating advantage in European earwigs, Forficula auricularia
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing sexual selection by female European earwigs Forficula auricularia of males on the basis of body size and forceps length. Male-male competition is also investigated.

Fluctuating asymmetry and forceps size in earwigs, Forficula auricularia
Article Abstract:
A study on the fluctuating asymmetry and forceps size in earwigs was conducted. Results indicate that during copulation, earwigs with larger forceps and thus more symmetry were more successful in mating than those with asymmetric forceps. This is caused by the greater ability of earwigs with larger forceps to separate mating pairs and taking over the female. Males with larger forceps also are more successful in competition for mates.
