Article Abstract:
The drug industry has begun to conduct animal studies during the very earliest stages of drug discovery in an attempt to save time and money as they hope to eliminate poor or unsafe compounds earlier in the process. These studies use a far fewer animals, or even unconventional drug-discovery animal models such as zebrafish or roundworms, to help scientists decide which compounds to promote to the development stage.

Biotech firms join charities in drive to help Africa's farms

DuPont (Wilmington, Delaware), Dow AgroSciences (Indianapolis, Indiana), Monsanto (St. Louis, Missouri) and Syngenta (Basel, Switzerland) are committed to the African Agricultural Technology Foundation's (Nairobi) aim of helping poor African countries use agricultural biotechnology to advance the agricultural industry. The Rockefeller Foundation has allocated $1 mil to plan the operation.
