Another green revolution
Article Abstract:
The three-dimensional structure of the green-fluorescent protein (GFP) as solved by Ormo et al. and Yang et al. affirms its potential as a label in fluorescence-imaging microscopy for monitoring the expression and location of other proteins within organisms. The jellyfish Auquorea victoria makes GFP, which functions along with calcium-ion-activated protein aequorin. Shaking or attack triggers a change in calcium-ion levels and aequorin generates an excited state, the blue light transferring to GFP and radiating a bright green flash.

Self-assembly of nanoscale cuboctahedra by coordination chemistry
Article Abstract:
The preparation of synthetic polyhedral molecular assemblies is a challenging problem, but the task can be addressed by advances in supramolecular chemistry. A cuboctahedron was prepared using self-assembly of molecular units, from 20 tridentate and bidentate subunits, in a single step. The self-assembled polyhedral capsules were characterized by NMR and electrospray mass spectrometry.
