Avoidance of recently eaten foods by land hermit crabs, Coenobita compressus
Article Abstract:
The hermit crab Coenobita compressus generally avoid foods it has been exposed to for at least nine hours. A laboratory choice assay was used to analyze induced food odor preferences in C. compressus. There was no sex and age difference in odor preferences. Hermit crabs which were given a variety of choices in food gained weight faster than did crabs fed only a single type of food. Aversion to food that the crab has recently eaten seems to promote the consumption of a more balanced diet in C. compressus.

Shell-size preference of hermit crabs depends on their growth rate
Article Abstract:
Forty hermit crabs of the species Pagurus middendorffii were examined to test the hypothesis that hermit crabs base their shell-size preference on their prospective growth rate. The findings provided support for the predictions that they choose larger shells when they approach moulting and when they anticipate a significant increase in size at the next moult. When opportunities for shell selection were limited, the size of the shells was not found to significantly affect the growth of the crabs.

The changing trade-off between food finding and food stealing in juvenile oystercatchers
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to study the trade-off between food finding and food stealing in the young oystercatchers, Haematopus ostralegus. Juvenile foraging behavior was compared with that of older birds to identify changes in juvenile decision taking from behavioral changes induced by the foraging environment. Additional data on time cost were also collected to evaluate the profitability of stealing a mussel rather than finding one on the mussel bed.
