Blueprints for partnerships
Article Abstract:
The genome sequencing is used to reveal a multifaceted partnership between a worm and four types of bacterium. The genomes have shown that the sulphide-oxidizing symbionts can respire by using trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a compound produced by the worm, which allows the bacteria to grow in the absence of oxygen or nitrate.

An acidic protein aligns magnetosomes along a filamentous structure in magnetotactic bacteria
Article Abstract:
The genes present in the identified chromosomal magnetosome island, (essential for magentosome formation) are studied to understand the mechanism of magnetosome formation. A gene deletion in magnetotactic bacteria is used to show that magenetosome alignment is coupled to the presence of the mamJ gene product.

Microbes reveal extent of biodiversity
Article Abstract:
Craig Venter's Global Ocean Sampling expedition team has uncovered rich microbial diversity in Sargasso Sea and has discovered almost 1,700 new protein families. The team has faced many challenges, as it has to predict protein sequences on the basis of the DNA sequences obtained from the samples.
