British drive for more women in science
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Athena Project aims to boost the number of women in science. The long term aim is to have the same proportion of women in academic positions as those recruited as undergraduates. One of the most significant elements of this scheme will be a register of women in higher education, assessing their education, qualifications, positions and income. This register will initially produce information for women in technology, science and engineering.

Article Abstract:
Efforts to achieve excellence in European science are being undermined by under representation of women and discriminatory employment practices, according to a report presented to the European Commission, by the European Technology Assessment Network (ETAN). ETAN recommends activities and support for networks of women in science, and grants aimed at women, although not excluding men.
