Mostly dead
Article Abstract:
Developments in cell suicide or apoptosis research are discussed. In particular the view that cells in which caspases have been activated have reached a point of no return is challenged.

Apoptotic cell death induced by c-myc is inhibited by bcl-2
Article Abstract:
The gene bcl-2 stops the apoptosis of cells caused by the proto-oncogene c-myc. Apoptosis is a type of cell death involving chromatin condensation, cytoplasmic blebbing and DNA fragmentation. C-myc can initiate both cell growth and apoptotic cell death; bcl-2 tilts the balance in favor of growth by inhibiting apoptosis. Bcl-2 probably accomplishes this by taking on the role of survival signal that stimulates c-myc to continue spurring cell growth.

CD4(super +) T-cell help controls CD8(super +) T-cell memory via TRAIL-mediated activation-induced cell death
Article Abstract:
The instructional program that governs the secondary response of CD8(super +) T cells is explored and fit is found that helpless cells undergo death by activation-induced cell death upon secondary simulation. Regulation of tumor-necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (Trail) expression can account for the role of CD4(super +) T cells in the generation of CD8(super +) T cell memory and represents a novel mechanism for controlling adaptive immune responses.
