Can CITES save the box turtle?
Article Abstract:
Inclusion of box turtles in The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora's (CITES) Appendix II will help to prevent illegal trading in box turtles. The inclusion of box turtles in Appendix II is recommended by The Fish and Wildlife Service. Habitat degradation and the international pet trade are the main reasons for the declining population of these turtles. Without a CITES listing it is difficult to control the trade of box turtles from states which do not prohibit the trade.

Eglin Air Force Base and sea turtle nesting: a success story
Article Abstract:
Eglin Air Force Base, FL, is an important nesting site for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle and the Atlantic green sea turtle. Eglin owns and manages two areas of Santa Rosa Island, where a sea turtle program was introduced in 1987. Nesting locations have been recorded using a geographical information system and sea turtle activity is monitored continuously throughout the nesting season, while steps are taken to ensure female turtles are undisturbed by activity at the base.

Sea turtle survey: cooperative effort in the Mansfield Channel
Article Abstract:
A study of the five green sea turtles species found in the Mansfield Channel, Texas, shows that these turtles stay in the Texas in-shore waters throughout the year except during winters, when they move to warmer and deeper waters. The study was initiated in June 1989 by the Padre Island National Seashore, and was funded by various agencies. Because of excessive fishing and extreme cold in the late 1800's these species are federally listed as endangered species.
