Canada's medical council wants larger role
Article Abstract:
The Canadian government will probably adopt a proposal to give the Medical Research Council (MRC) of Canada the dominant role in the country's health research. The proposal, developed at a national conference held on May 12 and 13, 1992, will empower the MRC over such areas of research as epidemiology, preventive health, environmental health and the testing of treatments. This is a significant extension of the MRC's authority, which until now had been limited to allocating research and training funds.

Canadian research council found guilty of job bias
Article Abstract:
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled that the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada discriminated against Indian-born physicist Chander P. Grover on account of his race. The Tribunal urged that the NRC be prosecuted under the country's Human Rights Act after concluding that Grover had been unfairly refused promotion and the chance to conduct research between Sep 1986 and Aug 1987. The NRC may appeal the decision.
