Catastrophic collapse at stratovolcanoes induced by gradual volcano spreading
Article Abstract:
Lateral displacement of sub-volcanic strata is likely to have been the cause of the flank failure of the Mombacho volcano in Nicaragua. Most volcanic failures are caused by magmatic intrusion and flank spreading, and a failure due to lateral displacement of sub-volcanic strata has not previously been identified. The features associated with the Mombacho volcano failure are the result of gradual processes, and can therefore be identified a long time before any failure takes place. When basement and flank spreading is identified, it is possible to predict the type and location of potential collapses.

Reykanes 'V'-shaped ridges originating from a pulsing and dehydrating mantle plume
Article Abstract:
Giant V-shaped crustal lineations cross the Reykjanes ridge, south of Iceland and are thought to show temporal variations in magma production at the ridge axis. A new study uses a geodynamic model to show how a radially expanding and pulsing plume cam cause Reykjanes V-shaped ridges.
