Chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, follow gaze direction geometrically
Article Abstract:
Chimpanzees and some other species will follow the gaze of humans, and this behavior is also found between chimps, in which case it may be useful in locating predators, food, and other chimps interacting. Two experiments have been carried out where chimps tracked human gaze. The first experiment involved a human looking at different barrier types, and the second involved a human observing the back of the chimps' cage. The chimps followed the gaze of the human although a distractor was introduced. The way that they follow human gaze direction appears to be similar to that of human infants, though it is unclear whether chimps aim to see what the human is perceiving.
