Immunosuppressive effects of apoptotic cells

Article Abstract:

Research shows that apoptotic cells secrete more of the cytokine interleukin-10 and less of the cytokines tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 and interleukin-12 at the time of monocyte activation. Evidence suggests that apoptotic cells are responsible for reduced inflammation and less effective cell-mediated immunity in a number of situations including pregnancy. Further research may prove that apoptotic cells have a beneficial use in medical applications such as skin grafts.

Bcl-2 prolongs cell survival after Bax-induced release of cytochrome c

Article Abstract:

It has been shown that the protein Bax, a pro-apoptotic homologue of Bcl-2, sparks off the same sequence of cellular events as previously seen with other apoptotic agents. Cytochrome c is released from mitochondria into the cytoplasm, and this is followed by the activation of death-effector caspases, nuclear fragmentation and apoptosis. It is clear that Bcl-2 can interfere with Bax killing downstream of, and independently of, cytochrome c release.
