Comparative social cognition: what can dogs teach us?
Article Abstract:
Challenges of social living that have formed the cognitive structures and control behaviours involved in communication, social learning and social understanding through research in comparative social recognition is addressed. The usefulness of the study of dogs that broadens the understanding of comparative social recognition is evaluated.

The socioecology of elephants: Analysis of the processes creating multitiered social structures
Article Abstract:
The formation and function of the multilevelled, fission-fusion social structure in a free-ranging African elephant, Loxodonta africana, population is investigated. Rigorous quantitative methods are used to statistically show the existence of four hierarchical tiers of social organization in a nonhuman animal.
