Conical dislocations in crumpling
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to make a quantitative description of the shape, response and stability of conical dislocations. It was established that in the early stages of crumpling, when large deformations of a small number of conical dislocations are much more likely to take place, bending dominates stretching. A series of events based on geometric softening, dynamic snap-through and local topological stiffening gives a microscopic mechanism for the crumpling of a large thin elastic sheet.

Non-equilibration of hydrostatic pressure in blebbing cells
Article Abstract:
The effect of local disruption of cortical contraction or integrity is studied to distinguish the possibilities induced by drug perfusion over part of a cell, in a filamin-depleted melanoma cell line that blebs extensively and continuously. The motion of the fluid relative to the network generates spatially heterogeneous transients in the pressure field and can be described in the framework of poroelasticity.

Non-stick water
Article Abstract:
Research into the behaviour of liquid droplets has involved adding a drop of water to a power of silane-coated spores of the club moss Lycopodium. The powder-coated droplets are non-wetting, and the droplet can roll and bounce without leaking.
