Cortical rewiring and information storage
Article Abstract:
Discussing that learning-related plasticity in the cortical wiring diagram, mediated by structural changes in spines, dendrites and axons, could underlie a second mode of long-term information storage in the adult cortex that operates in addition tot he more commonly accepted learning mode based on changes in synaptic weights. An alternative approach could involve the development of new technologies to allow rapid analysis of synaptic circuits on a large scale.

A new cellular mechanism for coupling inputs arriving at different cortical layers
Article Abstract:
A single back-propagating sodium action potential generated in th axon is shown to facilitate calcium action potentials when coinciding with distal dendritic input. The initiation of dendritic calcium action potentials can be selectively blocked by inhibitory dendritic input. Excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials in the distal dendrites have more control over actional potential initiation in the axon than is expected.

Sound grounds for computing dendrites
Article Abstract:
Dendrites are the main site for synaptic inputs to the cell body of neurons, but their function is largely unknown. New research on the coincidence detector cells in the auditory brain stem show that the shape and size of dendrites depends on where they are found in the brain and that these dendrites improve coincidence detection and sound localization.
