Niche overlap in sympatric populations of fox and gray squirrels
Article Abstract:
Fox squirrels and gray squirrels have similar food habits but manage to coexist successfully. However, quantitative measurements of niche overlap and breadth are not available. A new study on the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, GA, investigates the niche overlap and breadth in sympatric populations of gray and fox squirrels. It is shown that fox squirrel niches are significantly narrower than those of gray squirrels which use habitat in a wider range of structures. Habitat partitioning between the squirrels helps sympatry.

Use of climatic data to model the presence of oestrid flies in caribou herds
Article Abstract:
Warble flies and oestrid flies are unpleasant parasitic pests for caribou and reindeer and they can have negative effects on herds. A new study of a caribou herd in Alaska presents a model that predicts the presence of oestrid flies, the presence and absence of which was indexed by observing caribou annoyance behaviour, and based on climatic factors, such as wind speed and temperature.
