Does acoustic testing strand whales?
Article Abstract:
It is suggested that the stranding of Cuvier's beaked whales may be linked to tests of a submarine detection acoustic system because on May 12 and May 13 1996, 12 Cuvier's beaked whales were found on 38.2 kilometers of coastline on the Kyparissiakos Gulf. The whales were an average of 3.5 kilometers apart. This event is unusual because there have been only seven incidences of mass standings of these whales since 1963 and they are usually found together at the same time. Low frequency active sonar tests had been conducted by NATO in the same area from May 11 to May 15.

Not saving the whale: Japan's professed interest in whale research rings rather hollow
Article Abstract:
Japan is trying its level best to promote research into whaling and has called on the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to protect endangered and depleted species, while allowing the sustainable utilization of abundant species under a controlled, transparent and science-based management regime. The Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), which heads Japan's research whaling program, is criticized for its inaction in whale conservation.
