Earth's core not so hot
Article Abstract:
Temperatures at the Earth's core-mantle boundary (CMB) may be far lower than previously thought. R. Boehler and colleagues in Germany used a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell to find the melting points of three probable components of the core: Fe, FeO and FeS. The results indicated that the CMB's minimum temperature is between 2,600 and 3,400 K. This is significantly lower than the 3,600 to 5,300 K estimate obtained earlier by R. Jeanloz and colleagues in the US. The lower temperatures may force a re-examination of current ideas on the Earth's heat budget and generation of the magnetic dipole.

Geodynamic estimates of the viscosity of the Earth's inner core
Article Abstract:
The differential rotation of the Earth's inner core can be reconciled with the strong gravitational forces resulting from the heterogeneous distribution of mass in the Earth's mantle by permitting the shape of the inner core to change as it rotates. In this way, the effective viscosity of the inner core can be estimated. Geodynamic estimates of inner-core viscosity are significant for several purposes, with the value of viscosity having a considerable impact on dynamical processes such as thermal convection.
