Engineering Escherichia coli to see light
Article Abstract:
A bacterial system is designed that consists of a synthetic sensor kinase that allows a lawn of bacteria to function as a biological film, such that the projection of a pattern of light on to the bacteria produces a high-definition, two-dimensional chemical image. This spatial control of bacterial gene expression is used to print complex biological materials and investigate signaling pathways through precise spatial and temporal control of their phosphrylation steps.

Nutrients in remote mode
Article Abstract:
A demonstration that in one circulation system in the North Atlantic, known as the North Atlantic subtropical gyre, this lateral process adversely affects nutrient availability along the mode-water route, and hence, exerts a remote control on phytoplankton productivity. Results reveal that the reservoir south of the Gulf Stream is fuelled laterally with Subtropical Mode Water, which forms to the north of the gyre and then circulates southwards beneath the surface.
