Feedlot performance of steers and bulls actively immunized against gonadotropin-releasing hormone
Article Abstract:
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone-keyhole limpet hemocyanin conjugate (GnRH-KLH) immunization has better effects on bulls and steers as compared to surgical castration especially prior to testicular development. Antibodies against GnRH were detected within six weeks and peak levels were detected at 16 to 20 weeks post-immunization. Feeding and carcass quality are not affected by the GnRH-KLH. Active immunization against GnRH resulted in reduced testicular growth while perfomance traits and serum LH levels were unaffected. Castration resulted in decreased perfomance and carcass quality which was partially reversed by anabolic steroids.

Relationship between blood hemoglobin, plasma and tissue iron, muscle heme pigment, and carcass color of veal
Article Abstract:
Results of a study on calves indicated that iron concentration on various tissues such as liver, spleen and muscle is influenced by levels dietary iron supplementation. Three groups of calves were supplied with different levels of iron during seven weeks of fattening and iron concentrations in blood, plasma and various tissues was examined at slaughter. The results proved that though not evident in the visual color examination of the carcass, different levels iron-intake influence blood hemoglobin, iron concentration in plasma, tissues and muscle heme in calves.
