French researchers oppose biomedical reform plan
Article Abstract:
Some researchers at Inserm, France's national biomedical research agency, are opposed to plans to reorganize its administration and boost its ability to undertake strategic planning. They fear that these changes could lead to a reduction in their influence over approaches to research. Reorganization at Inserm would include dividing it into scientific departments, with each being controlled by an official selected by the Ministry for National Education, and boosting the role of the agency's administrative council.

Autonomy by stealth for French universities
Article Abstract:
The new conservative minister for higher education and research in France, Francois Fillon, is determined to make the French universities autonomous. This has led to a conflict between those who want to retain the nationalized university system and the conservatives who are in favor of privatization. Officials at the higher education union (SGEN-CFDT) are skeptical about the equality promised under the new system by Fillon.
