Fresh start for photonics
Article Abstract:
Photonic materials with nonlinear optical properties may become practical if they generate molecules in their excited states rather than in their ground states. A.F. Garito and colleagues used this technique to produce photonic materials with the large nonlinearities and strength that will be necessary if such possible applications as optical computing and optical radar are to be realized. Although the polyenes produced by Garito and co-workers are not usable, this research does open the way to development of photonics, the optical analogue of electronics.

On the threshold of success
Article Abstract:
Semiconductor lasers can be made from minute crystals that have a strong interaction with some light frequencies. New research shows they can be stimulated electrically, making it possible to integrate them with conventional electronic devices.
