NO release for good measure
Article Abstract:
A new microsensor has been developed for determining nitric oxide (NO) concentrations in the body, a prerequisite to investigating the many physiological roles of NO. The new sensor is important because never before have researchers had a convenient means for measuring NO due to its short half-life. Tadeusz Malinski and Ziad Taha used a polymer of porphyrin with nickel as the central metal to fashion an electrochemical detector that exploits NO's quick oxidation and diffusibility.

A predictor of pathology
Article Abstract:
Smith and colleagues have studied Huntington's disease, the genetically inherited movement disorder, identifying asymptomatic carriers of the disease gene. They predict that those people would develop the disorder within the next five to 10 years. Symptoms of the disease had to be severe before a definite diagnosis could be made, before the affected gene was identified, but Smith and colleagues studied carriers of the Huntington's disease gene before any symptoms were exhibited.

A huntingtin-associated protein enriched in brain with implications for pathology
Article Abstract:
A protein that binds to a huntingtin gene and whose binding is enriched by an expanded polyglutamine repeat is analyzed in relation to its link to the pathological study of the brain in Huntington's disease. The disorder involves the expansion of the polyglutamine repeat which has toxic effects. The huntingtin gene's function has not been fully identified although its role in genetic development is acknowledged.
