Green shoots of growth
Article Abstract:
The upward movement in the prices of oil and natural gas and the need to reduce greenhouse-gas emission has renewed the interest in biomass and related revival of concerns about the security of gas supply. The world community should conduct intensive research to propel fast and efficient production of biomass and its conversion into useable energy, in order to realize the potential role of biomass as a part of a portfolio of energy sources for the twenty-first century.

The Arctic tells its story
Article Abstract:
A scientific project in the Arctic has provided a detailed picture of the Arctic's role in the long-term cooling and its response during oscillations of the preceding greenhouse climates. The project has revealed a closer link between atmospheric C[O.sub.2] and the greenhouse-icehouse transition, resulting from older sediments in the Arctic core exposing some surprising gaps in the workings of climate in a greenhouse world.
