Habitat selection and breeding status of Swainson's warblers in southern Missouri
Article Abstract:
The canebrake (Arundinaria gigantea) used by the Swainson's warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii) for its nesting site was used to assess the bird's habitat selection behavior and productivity. The warbler used the stands of cane that had high cane densities, low canopy and sub-canopy heights and sparse ground vegetation. A model was developed using canebrake as an indicator of occupancy that would enable calculations in breeding productivity.

Nest-site characterization and reproductive success of Mississippi kites in the Mississippi River floodplains
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of Mississippi kite nesting habitat and reproductive success along the Mississippi River were investigated to determine their habitat requirements and population status. Results indicated that kites select patches of atypical tall trees surrounding an even taller nest tree for nesting sites. This suggested that assuring the sustainability of tall trees would have positive, long-term effects on kite habitat.

Demographic factors contributing to high raccoon densities in urban landscapes
Article Abstract:
A comparison is presented of raccoon population densities in rural, suburban, and urban sites in Illinois. Population density was highest at the urban site due to increased site fidelity, higher annual recruitment, and increased survival rates. Implications for management and control are discussed, such as removal of anthropogenic food sources.
