Honeydew flicking by treehoppers provides cues to potential tending ants
Article Abstract:
The untended honeydew-producing treehoppers, Guayaquila xiphias, flick accumulated honeydew on the ground which direct the ground-dwelling ants towards the host plants of the treehoppers in the savannas of Brazil. The ants move up the host plants and start tending activity. Host plants beneath which honeydew soaked filter paper is placed attract more ants than those beneath which water soaked filter paper is placed. The capacity to attract tending ants by the treehoppers is important as these ants protect them against predators and parasitoids.

Spontaneous flower constancy and learning in honey bees as a function of colour
Article Abstract:
An experiment to determine spontaneous flower constancy and learning in honey bees is presented. The onset of constancy is described and the foraging behaviour of honey bees is discussed. The study concludes that constancy is spontaneous in honey bees, but can be masked by experimental conventions aimed at studying learning.
