In a blink of the mind's eye
Article Abstract:
The nature of attention and conscious visual experience are given greater insight through research into 'attentional blink.' Some researchers have discovered that hearing and vision are distinctly separate, as attentional blink of the eye does not equate to a blink of the ear. Evidence suggests that visual attentional resources can be focused on a visual target but an auditory task can still be performed. Other researchers have found that some simple visual tasks cannot be carried out without attention, contrary to popular belief.

Retinal direction selectivity after targeted laser ablation of starburst amacrine cells
Article Abstract:
It has been proposed that the synaptic symmetrical starburst amacrine cells are the source of directional response in retinal ganglion cells. New research shows that this is unlikely and offers an alternative theory of starburst cells' function. The starburst cells appear to be generalized, non-directional enhancers of motion sensitivity and that another, as yet unknown, amacrine cell is responsible for direction discriminating.

Article Abstract:
Synaesthetes are discussed with reference to their mental arithmetic ability. The results show that external influences such as visual experiences are not necessary to trigger photisms.
