Induction of visceral and cardiac mesoderm by ectodermal Dpp in the early Drosophila embryo
Article Abstract:
The transforming growth factor-beta Decapentaplegic (Dpp) determines which mesodermal cells in the Drosophila embryo will form the visceral mesoderm and the heart. Dpp is a signal molecule which is necessary for the stimulation of the tinman homeobox gene in the mesoderm. The tinman gene in turn stimulates another homeobox gene bagpipe in certain mesodermal cells which form the visceral mesoderm. Heart formation is controlled by the expression of tinman. Mutants lacking Dpp show normal tinman expression in the beginning which is lost after migration of mesodermal cells.

Jeb signals through the ALK receptor tryosine kinase to drive visceral muscle fusion
Article Abstract:
Drosophila Alk RTK is crucial for visceral mesoderm development during early embryogenesis. Drosophila Alk is the receptor for Jeb in developing visceral mesoderm, and the Jeb binding stimulates an Alk-driven, which results in the expression of the downstream gene duf needed for muscle fusion.

Jelly belly protein activates the receptor tyrosine kinase Alk to specify visceral muscle pioneers
Article Abstract:
The structure and distribution of Jeb protein implies Jeb functions as a signal to organize the development of visceral muscles. The Jeb receptor is the Drosophila homologue of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), a receptor tryosine kinase of the insulin receptor superfamily.
