Intramuscular and intravenous immobilization of juvenile southern elephant seals
Article Abstract:
It has been relatively uncommon for wild seals to be immobilised for research purposes using only intravenously administered drugs, with most researchers preferring the intramuscular route. Recent research has compared these two methods, considering which is more appropriate for immobilising juvenile southern elephant seals. It was found that time to induction is shorter and less variable with intravenous injections, with a lower and less variable dose of ketamine being required. Of 32 seals injected intravenously, eight had apneas ranging from eight to 20 minutes.

Estimating body mass and condition of leopard seals by allometrics
Article Abstract:
Published and unpublished morphometric data was used to construct allometric models for estimating leopard seal body mass. A seal body condition index that could assist wildlife management when deciding if rehabilitation of vagrant seals is warranted was developed, suggesting that body condition might also affect the induction, duration and recovery timers of anaesthetized leopard seals.

Assessing hot-iron and cryo-branding for permanently marking southern elephant seals
Article Abstract:
The useful advances made in animal ecology, management and conservation were largely achieved through branding and to ensure accurate survival estimates it is important that correct marking techniques are employed. A study assessed the effectiveness of hot-branding as well as the less invasive cryo-branding on the survival rates of elephant seals.
