Japan's new premier chases innovation
Article Abstract:
Japan's new prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has appointed Kiyoshi Kurokawa as his special adviser and they have together promised to reform Japan's rigid structures of scientific education, funding and decision-making, in order to boost technology and innovation in the country. Kurokawa will also be helping in creating Innovation 25, a plan to forecast what society needs will be in 2025, and suggesting what research should be done in medicine, information technology and the environment to meet those requirements.

Budget plans hint at lean times ahead for Japanese research
Article Abstract:
The Japan Finance Ministry who had exempted the research department from cost cutting for boosting global competitiveness till so far has suggested a 2-3% cut to the research budget in the year 2005. The government plans to focus on large-scale projects such as space-missions and super computers by prioritizing how money allocated for research is spent.
