Making and breaking bonds
Article Abstract:
Hydrogen molecules that are fast-moving or whose bonds are vibrationally excited stand a better chance of disintegrating and clinging to a surface when directed at a copper sample. Researchers A. Hodgson and colleagues found that excitation is essential to the breaking-up of molecules at solid surfaces. Moreover, the association of sticking probabilities with collisional excitation supports the idea that vibrational excitation and molecular dissociation require the stretching of molecular bonds.
