Microscopic magnetic-field imaging
Article Abstract:
One-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) are used in a microscopic field-imaging technique that combines high spatial resolution with high sensitivity. A comparison of different magnetic-field measurement techniques shows that BECs as magnetic sensors could reach unprecedented sensitivity over a large range of spatial resolution.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thoiless crossover in a trapped atomic gas
Article Abstract:
The observation of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thoiless (BKT)-type crossover in a trapped quantum degenerate gas of rubidium atoms is reported. The findings provide direct experimental evidence for the microscopic mechanism underlying the BKT theory, and raise new queries regarding coherence and superfluidity in mesoscopic systems.

Mastering the language of atoms
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning atom manipulation at the quantum level are discussed. In particular the use of atom chip devices for the study of Bose-Einstein condensates is examined.
