Mir for the crystallographers' money
Article Abstract:
New experiments aboard the Russian space station Mir indicate that the microgravity of space may be useful for growing protein crystals. Some critics have asserted that protein crystal research in space is touted merely to provide a pretext for expensive projects such as Mir and the US space station Freedom. However, the experiments aboard Mir attained a 24% success rate that warrants further attempts to perfect the technique. Mir proved to be a more dependable vehicle for crystal research than the US space shuttle.

DNA binding and cleavage by the nuclear intron-encoded homing endonuclease I-Ppol
Article Abstract:
The diverse homing endonuclease proteins are encoded by genes with mobile and self-splicing introns. Four groups of homing endonucleases have been identified, and I-Ppol was the first identified His-Cys box homing endonuclease. Its structure is bound to homing-site DNA determined to a.8 A resolution. It has a new zinc-bound fold and endonuclease active site, and its structure is determined in uncleaved and cleaved complexes.

Structure of the C2 domain of human factor VIII at 1.5 A resolution
Article Abstract:
The structure of human factor VIII C2 domain at 1.5 A resolution is reported, revealing a beta-sandwich core, from where two beta turns and a loop display a group of solvent-exposed hydrophobic residues. The structure provides a part explanation for mutations in the C2 area of factor VIII that result in bleeding disorders in haemophilia A.
