Towards traps for cold molecules
Article Abstract:
Molecular cooling is done by the alignment of the molecules using liquid helium to steal the translational and vibrational energy from the gas molecules. The extra energy is carried away when the vapor pressure is high. The molecules are trapped in strong infrared laser beams for alignment which is improved on increasing the rotational constant of the molecules. The energy states of the trapped molecules, according to Bretislav Friedrich and Dudley Herschbach, should be 1 Kelvin less than the energy of escape.

Can quantum theory be understood?
Article Abstract:
Quantum theory is poorly taught to non-physics majors, and instruction should be based on phenomena which are clearly puzzling but allow positive proofs. The production of electron-pairs as captured in cloud chamber photographs provides an occasion for the discussion of vacuum as a potential particle source. An experiment designed by C.I. Sukenik may be used to demonstrate that a vacuum is potentially an inexhaustible source of photons.
