Molecular identification of a hyperpolarization-activated channel in sea urchin sperm
Article Abstract:
Chemotactic peptides attract sperm to sea urchin eggs. The complementary DNA encoding a channel polypeptide, SPIH, has been cloned from sea urchin testis. Functional expression of SPIH was found to lead to weakly K+ selective hyperpolarization-activated channels, enhanced by cAMP. The SPIH channel may participate in the control of flagellar beating. SPIH currents exhibit hyperpolarization activated currents which are involved in central neuron firing.

Molecular identification of the gene responsible for congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus
Article Abstract:
A defect in the V2 receptor gene causes congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (CNDI), an X-linked recessive disorder in which the kidneys react improperly to arginine vasopressin. An examination of a male CNDI patient found that the genetic defect produced a frame shift and premature termination of translation in the third intracellular loop of the receptor protein.

Identification of the haematopoietic stem cell niche and control of the niche size
Article Abstract:
Haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are a subset of bone marrow cells that are capable of self-renewal and of forming all types of blood cells (multi-potential). The HSC niche the in vivo regulatory microenvironment where HSCs reside and the mechanisms involved in controlling the number of adult HSCs remain largely unknown.
