Natural forest management and conservation of biodiversity in tropical forests
Article Abstract:
Natural forest management has not been proven as a way of preserving biodiversity in tropical forests. Any logging may lower diversity through simplification and homogenization. Natural forest management also is associated with social and economic concerns that should be addressed. Alternatives to sustainable natural forest management should also be considered, including secondary forest management, land restoration, plantation forestry and nontimber uses of forests.

Protected areas and conservation of biodiversity in the tropics
Article Abstract:
Comparisons of protected and unprotected regions in Costa Rica indicate sharp differences in rates of deforestation and fragmentation between 1976 and 1996. While protected areas had low deforestation rates, unprotected areas showed high, fluctuating deforestation rates and steadily increasing fragmentation rates. Unprotected forests are therefore at significant risk of losing considerable biodiversity unless environmental management policies are implemented.
