New doubts over rock-dating techniques
Article Abstract:
The rock-dating techniques developed by an Arizona State University (ASU) geographer, Ronald I. Dorn, have been shown to be meaningless by researchers from four institutions. There are also suggestions that some results may have been fabricated. Dorn has acknowledged that the method is flawed, but had denied any impropriety. The method involves treating varnish scrapings from the rock surface and then analyzing the remaining substance using accelerator mass spectrometry. Many of Dorn's samples contained coal and or charcoal-like materials, which have widely disparate radiocarbon dates.

University museum seeks independence
Article Abstract:
The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle is seeking independence from its current owner, the University of Washington, mainly due to the lack of financial backing for a modernization and expansion project. The Burke Museum is renowned for its ornithology specimens and officials want a new facility to house specimen and create new research laboratories. A committee has been established to determine how the museum could become a private corporation.
