Novel retinal photoreceptors
Article Abstract:
Salmon vertebrate ancient (VA) opsin is shown to form a functional photopigment in vitro. It is also expressed in vivo in a subset of retinal horizontal and amacrine cells. The sites of VA-opsin expression in the salmon eye were determined using in situ hybridization. VA opsin was restricted to a group of cells with horizontal and amacrine cell location and morphology characteristics.

Binding of phytochrome B to its nuclear signalling partner PIF3 is reversibly induced by light
Article Abstract:
A nuclear basic helix-loop-helix protein, PIF3 was cloned. It binds to non-photoactive carboxy-terminal fragments of phytochromes A and B. Full-length phytochrome B is shown to bind PIF4 in vitro, only on light-induced conversion to its active form. It is concluded that photosensory signalling by phytochrome B involves the light-induced recognition of PIF3.

A cold break for photoreceptors
Article Abstract:
Genick and colleagues have studied the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) discovered in the Ectothiorhodospira halophila bacterium. Crystals of PYP were excited at liquid-nitrogen temperatures, and their 0.85-A structure shows that a chromophore began a trans-to-cis isomerization around its C7-C8 double bond, but was trapped halfway between.
