Nurturing native plants
Article Abstract:
Susan Spackman has carried out a survey of six rare plants in Mesa County, Colorado, with a Native Plant Conservation Initiative grant. She has found new colonies of the six species which include Lomatium Latilobum and four types of milkvetch or Astragalus. Mesa is booming and this could affect wild plants The Mesa County commissioners have also awarded a grant for a biological survey of some 1.6 million Federal acres and 576,000 acres of non-federal land. The initiative aims to increase public awareness as well as conserve species.

Native trout rebound in the Blackfoot River
Article Abstract:
An initiative led by the Big Blackfoot Chapter of Trout Unlimited to rebuild the Blackfoot River trout fishery in Montana has seen considerable success. Redd (spawning beds) counts for bull trout in two significant tributaries have risen from just 18 redds in 1989 to 130 in 1997, while westslope cutthroat trout numbers in the mainstem of the Blackfoot River have risen by 720% since 1989. Improving the fishery has also had a beneficial impact on other species, including bald eagles.

Safe places for plants
Article Abstract:
The American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta fosters cooperation between gardens to promote plant conservation. Gardens can help increase the stock of plants so they can be reintroduced and carry out research on plant management. Some gardens focus on native plants, such as Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in California. Some 45 million visitors go to botanic gardens annually, and they play a major public education role.
