One thousand families for the molecular biologist
Article Abstract:
Efforts to classify proteins into families based on gene sequencing indicate that most proteins probably belong to no more than 1,000 such families. Protein classification, with the insight it provides on ancestry and evolution, is an important concern for molecular biology. The continuing work on expanding protein gene sequence databanks suggests that approximately 1/4 of such sequences come from one of 120 protein families; the resulting estimate of 1,500 protein families falls to 1,000 when allowance is made for possible errors.

Identification of the receptor component of the IkappaBalpha-ubiquitin ligase
Article Abstract:
The PIkappaBalpha-ubiquitin ligase, attaching ubiquitin to the phosphorylated NF-kappaB inhibitor PikappaBalpha, has been isolated. The specific component of the ligase recognizing pIkappaBalpha degradation motif is identified, denoted as E3RSIkappaB. It binds specifically to pIkappaBalpha and represents a family of receptor proteins that are key components of ubiquitin ligases.
