Parent-offspring recognition in thick-billed murres (Aves: Alcidae)
Article Abstract:
The development of parent-offspring recognition in the thick-billed murre, Uria lomvia, was studied using field experiments. Cross-fostering experiments revealed that the possibility of parents accepting a foreign chick decline with chick age. Simultaneous-choice playback experiments showed that chicks were able to recognize the calls of their parents. In presentation experiments with chicks of fledgling age, adults responded more strongly to the calls of their own chicks.

Egg recognition and egg stealing in murres (Uria spp.)
Article Abstract:
A study exploring the egg recognition behavior of thick-billed and common murres was conducted. Results indicate that both species of murres were more likely to recognize their own egg given a choice between their own and a foreign egg. In the absence of their own egg, thick-billed murres were more likely to accept the foreign egg which leads to the conclusion that they are more prone to steal foreign eggs in the absence or loss of their own.

Locational memory and female-pup reunions in Mexican free-tailed bat maternity colonies
Article Abstract:
An experiment exploring locational memory and female-pup reunions in Mexican free-tailed bat maternity colonies was conducted. Locational memory allows the female bat to locate her pup in a creche containing 13 to 3595 pups. Results from observations indicate that olfactory cues aid in the close-up identification of the pups and locational cues are the primary mechanism used to find the pup.
