Female attraction by males versus sites in territorial rutting red deer
Article Abstract:
The study on male red deer, Cervus elaphus, to examine whether females were drawn to males or to places showed that the number of females declined in all cases when the owner was impelled to protect a new area. The decline was bigger than in control areas and after the fence was taken away, males regained some of the lost females. Territoriality protects a male's resources and his success is based on the location of territory.

Territorial defence is the major function of female song in the superb fairy-wren, Malurus cyaneus
Article Abstract:
The chief function of female song is territorial defense and to provide receivers with variations in the song to discriminate between different classes of individuals. Females are more likely to sing in answer to songs of male or female neighbors than to their or mates' song. The response of females is more intense to songs of stranger than to that of their neighbours or mates.
