Proceed with caution, says UK report on ethics of GM foods
Article Abstract:
The UK government should take firm action on many elements of the development and introduction of genetically modified (GM) foods, according to the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. However, this organization rejects opposition to GM foods on the basis of their perceived unnaturalness or potential for misuse. The report expresses strong support for the use of GM crops in developing countries, claiming that the UK government should set aside a large proportion of its aid budget for research and development on GM basic foods grown in Third World countries.

Defining misconduct: US Academy offers strict definitions but ducks other urgent issues
Article Abstract:
The National Academy of Sciences' report on fraud in research and science reflects the prevailing uncertainty in the academic and scientific communities about professional standards and misconduct. The report, entitled 'Responsible Science: Ensuring the Integrity of the Research Process.' is correct in urging a precise definition of misconduct but fails to suggest how investigations should be conducted. Moreover, the report falls short of acknowledging the competitive realities among scientists that make usable guidelines essential.

Critics of 'gene foods' report are avoiding the real issues
Article Abstract:
