Reconciling particulate organic carbon flux and sediment community oxygen consumption in the deep North Pacific
Article Abstract:
New measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) and the mineralization of this carbon into CO2 in the North Pacific have brought these two previously conflicting processes to within 15% of agreement. This is a vast improvement over previous estimates which had found the POC rate to be as much as 97% short of what is needed to account for the observed levels of CO2 in the benthic community. The new, reconciled figures were obtained by including newly discovered episodic inputs of POC when making the calculations.

The transient response of terrestrial carbon storage to a perturbed climate
Article Abstract:
Two general circulation models of the carbon cycle were employed to estimate the transient response of terrestrial carbon storage to a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. Changes in global vegetation distributions and soil storage of carbon were estimated given the assumption of doubled CO2 concentrations and the resultant warming. It was found that the transient response in the first 50 to 100 years would increase atmospheric CO2 concentration to a third over 1993 levels.
