'Roots' in mixotrophic algae
Article Abstract:
The rhizoids of the marine macroalgae Caulerpa taxifolia contain endocellular bacteria and function as roots that are capable of deriving nutrients from the substrate. The endocellular bacteria take up organic nitrogen and carbon, inorganic phosphorus, dissolved amino acids and translocate the nutrients to photoassimilatory organs. Nutrients released due to chemical action when the rhizoids attach to mineral surface are directly taken up by the algae. The gravipositive rhizoids, stolons and fronds act as vascular plant organs.
