Russian waste goes to ground
Article Abstract:
Russia, like the US, faces the problem of nuclear waste contamination from its vast industrial weapons complex. The problem, however, is far more acute in the case of Russia. Weapons plants in the former USSR are thought to have spewed out 100 times as much radioactivity into the environment as their US counterparts. The former USSR also exhibited a callous attitude towards the effect of these materials on its own population, dumping waste directly into lakes and rivers and taking only minimal measures at protection. Russia has taken steps to address this problem but environmental remediation efforts are still virtually non-existent.

$6bn package to cut US carbon emissions comes under attack
Article Abstract:
Some economists, including those at the Energy Information Administration (EIA) doubt that the proposed research and tax incentive package will have much impact on total US emissions of carbon dioxide. The tax incentives include credits for businesses and consumers, and the research and development proposals have some basis in recommendations made by a panel of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
